‘Whatever a child is, gold’ or ‘His heart is so good to be gold.’ Such phrases both come out easily and are profound in meaning. That is, if somebody is just so good, we compare him or her to gold. But that is what we are dealing with here, discussing the purity of gold, meaning we have to find out exactly how real the gold you have or are going to buy really is. Now, do you know how to test gold for quality and purity? Digital purity machines will check the purity of gold within a minute, whereas a laboratory would require some four hours.

Gold Rate in Pakistan

Before elaborating on the assay of gold, let us talk about its pricing and fluctuations in Pakistan. For the first time ever on February 7, the price of gold in Pakistan crossed the Rs 300,000 mark for each tola. This past week has supplied further impetus to the increasing trend of gold prices, with the price quoted on Tuesday closing above the Rs 303,000-mark. What Things to Look for When Buying Gold

Gold by Karat

Jewelry of 22-carat gold is the most popular among the market. Such jewelry needs to bear a hallmark. Hallmarking includes the logo of the government bureau; a symbol indicating the carat (karat) of the jewelry, such as 22K; and an individual hall marking number. Real gold jewelry must possess these three features. To sell jewelry without these three features is unlawful and punishable under the law in every country.

Types of Gold by Karat

Gold karat grades vary according to which it is understood to illustrate purity and genuineness. Therefore it is divided into 24, 23, 22, 20, 18, and 14 karat. In jewelry, gold is mainly in 22K, 18K, and 14K. Gold of a purity of 995 would not be suitable for jewelry making because it would be mixed with metals for strength. Therefore, it is understood that 995 gold is 24K.

This means that in an alloy of one thousand milligrams, 995 milligrams would be of gold, so when this becomes 958 gold it means that it has 95.8% of gold, which qualifies it to be 23 karat, and when 916 gold with 91.6% of gold will be called 22 karat. If it contains 833 parts of gold to 1,000, then it is generally termed as 20 karat gold; if it harbors 750 parts of gold in 1,000, then that very gold is called as 18 karat.

In a similar vein, it would be called 14-karat gold if it contained 585 parts of gold in a thousand. The most pertinent factor was the measurement of actual gold content in any jewelry, which varies widely in how much other metals can be added. Any excess could jeopardize the consumer’s interests.

How pure is pure gold?

Gold laboratories test purity. Which method? Checking the originality of this gold will take a few hours or, at best, a day. Government officials take hallmark samples from several shops of gold. No matter what shop it is taken from, it is given a specific code. In the lab, it will be assigned a different code.

“Total control during purity checks of gold makes it impossible to know, from which shop the gold brought is being tested. This is how it is making everything transparent,” says Sattu Savita, Joint Director of BIS, India. For preliminary assessment, XRF is the machine used for testing samples. Their carat value is estimated, weighed, and noted in the register.

The samples are categorized into 22, 18, and 14 carats. If any illegitimate ingredients are found in it, these samples are excluded. If these samples do not contain any illegal ingredients, gold is melted at the temperature of 1100°C for 5-10 minutes. The specific weight of the molten gold is compared with the pre-estimated one. The mixture is then pressed to buttons by hydraulic machines and rolled into thin sheets.

The sheet profiled is cut into very small pieces with scissors, afterwhich 150 mg of butter is put on the paper. A mixture of gold, silver, and copper is poured onto butter paper in a glass jar. It is then re-weighed. Smaller balls are formed by using a machine called boiling player and are melted in a furnace.

This is then heated to a temperature of 1000 degrees Celsius. By the time this is over, all the rest will be oxidized, while the gold and silver will remain. The nitric acid with which deionized water is used separates silver from gold. This takes about 15 minutes. Authenticity in gold is determined by changing the color of the gold and with a variety of numerical formulas.

The remaining mixture after this process is weighed and compared with the weight against gold brought from the shop for testing. The waste in this process is measured and the rest of the mixture is decoded and sent back to the shop from which it was brought.

What metals can be injurious in mixing with gold?

Other metals are called for gold to improve its properties. But, cadmium, osmium, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, and iridium are prohibited within the addition into gold. This does not create a gold alloy. Please note that cadmium also has adverse effects on the human body, and therefore, these substances are restricted. However, silver, copper, and zinc can be incorporated into gold alloys.
