The Chinese launch of the artificial intelligence app, DeepSec, reverberated in financial markets worldwide, and US President Donald Trump described it as a “wake-up call” for the US tech sector. DeepSec states its AI model R-1 was developed at a lesser cost compared to other rival models. The claim has raised questions about the future of the entire industry and has led to a decline in the value of some of the world’s largest companies.

DeepSec vs ChatGPT

DeepSec has become the most downloaded free app in the US just a week after its launch, raising the question of where it stands compared to its already established and seemingly much more expensive US rivals such as OpenAI, ChatGPT, and Google’s Gemini.

Writing assistance

When you ask ChatGPT what the biggest reasons are for using it, he claims that helping people write is one of those reasons. It has become a tool for its users to collect information in a helpful format, summarize it, and write blog posts on a wide range of topics.

Thus, it has become a helpful companion for many people in their office work. As a proud fan of the Scottish football team, I asked the chatbots to ‘draft a blog post summarizing the greatest Scottish football players of all time.’ Similarly, I asked ChatGPT and DeepSec to provide summaries of the greatest Scottish football players.

DeepSec responded within seconds and produced a list of the top ten players, with Liverpool and Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish at number one. It also provided information about the players, including the position they play in and the clubs they play for, as well as summaries of their notable performances.

Deep Sack also profiled two non-Scottish players. One of them was Danish native and Rangers legend Brian Laudrup and the other was Celtic hero Henrik Larsson. Deep Sack for Larsen added that ‘Swedish Larsen is often included in discussions of Scottish football legends due to his impact at Celtic.’ For his subsequent blog post, he detailed Laudrup’s nationality before offering a brief overview of the players’ careers.

In response to the same question, ChatGPT’s answers had many names in common. He also put ‘King Kenny’ at the top. His detailed blog post concisely and accurately covered the careers of all the players. He concluded that ‘although the game has changed over the decades, the impact of these Scottish greats is everlasting.’ And there is no doubt about that. In this fun test, DeepSec definitely looked more valuable than its most popular American competitor, ChatGPT.

Coding

The emergence of advanced models of artificial intelligence has made a big difference to those who code. When ChatGPT faced an outage last week, many coding or developer users made humorous posts on the social media platform X about not being able to do their work without their trusty tool.

How can DeepSec compare here?

AI researcher Javier Aguirre is involved in the field of medicine, that is, research into medicine and artificial intelligence, at Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. On Tuesday, he wrote in a post on the social platform LinkedIn that “I am very impressed with DeepSec. During coding, we usually try to take AI chatbots to the point where they explode to see their capabilities in helping with coding.”

“Today I have a really difficult and complex problem in front of me. Even ChatGPTOOne couldn’t give me a proper solution. I then tried DeepSec and it solved it immediately with accuracy.” He also pointed out that a combination of models for coders can lead to success, a point echoed by Eddie Osmani, head of Chrome Developer Experience at Google.

In a post to his 208,000 followers on LinkedIn, he talked about combining DeepSec with Claude Sonnet, a tool from American artificial intelligence company Anthropic. It should be noted that in 2023, Amazon invested four billion US dollars in Anthropic.

“Coding with artificial intelligence? CloudSonet with DeepSec R-1 for coding could be the best hybrid model. And yes, engineers are using them together,” said Eddie Osmani. Osmani also said that DeepSec is actually ‘significantly cheaper’ to use than both the Cloud Sonnet and the OpenAIKO-1 model.

New ideas

We thought about brainstorming new ideas and asked ChatGPT and DeepSec to ‘give me ideas about a boy living on the moon to develop children’s stories.’ ChatGPT came up with six neat ideas in seconds. One of them was about a boy named Max who works as a postman on the moon and is sent on an adventure.

Another was about Oliver who is drawn to the sounds of a mysterious orchestra created by aliens. None of these stories will challenge Harry Potter or the Rool of the Dragons anytime soon, but it could be the beginning of even better ideas blossoming.

On the other hand, DeepSec responded with just one idea. He presented the idea of ‘Luna and a boy who chases the stars.’ His response was 387 words long in which he did not explain what ‘Luna’ was, but rather told the story of a curious boy named Milo who lives on the moon.

I found that while ChatGPT gave me six different ideas, DeepSec wrote a whole story. Although the story wasn’t very good, it quickly delivered a story based on a simple character going from A to B. It’s just the beginning, but it’s impressive.
